Setting up Multiple OBIEE systems/Instances on 64-bit windows server 2003

Installation and Configuration of the BI System can be found here

This is the continution and creation of another instance/BI system.

Generally, I see two ways of doing this, where we are not talking about clustering. Depending on the requirement and resource availability decide on the best approach.

We can have a new instance of the BI system with in the same Oracle Home
(Two Instances)
- or We can do a complete new install of the BI system on the same server
(Two Oracle BI homes)

(we need to do a simple install on 32-bit system where as we need to do the software only install on 64-bit machines and then configure the system )
Based on your requirement and reqresource availability select the specific option. Both options go in almost same lines. So, here I am working on the First option on a 64-bit machine.

Pre-requisites :
Setting up BI schemas: you need to run RCU and deploy the schemas MDS and BIPLATFORM (with a different prefix) as we did for the other BI system, as the same schemas can’t be shared by two systems.

Ports Configuration: There are two ways to configure ports for new instance (as the existing system has the default ports in use we cant use them again)

1. Running the configuration Wizard for creating new BI System while the existing BI system is available. Make sure you have the other installed BI system up and running, that way BI system automatically increments the ports for the new system.
Note: All the services should be up and running along with presentation services.

2. Select ’specify ports using config file’ where you need to provide the system with staticports.ini file to declare the ports for new BI system.
You need to use the Staticports.ini file format supplied to the configuration wizard to specify specific ports.
Both these options are good and anyone can be followed. But in option 1, you dont have a way to specify any ports and configurationwizard automatically assigns them by incrementing or random selection based on availability.

Configuration steps for New BI System.

Start the configuration Wizard from exixting Oracle Home -> bin->config.bat command
Click next and when the Create or Scale out BI system option shows up, Click on Create BI system and then provide details as shown below…..

Make sure you click on "Create New BI System" and then enter the details as shown above for new BI system. Make sure you create a new domain (XXX_bifoundation_domain) apart from the existing domain. Click next..........
image002
Here Leave the Middleware home and Oracle home and Weblogic server home same as the default values (previous install values) and for instance home and instance change default name to a custom name as shown above.
Click next image003
Review the products that you want to include in this BI system.
image004
On the Database connection screen, give the details for database connection as shown above and also BIPLATFORM schema username and password which were created earlier (as described in the Pre-Requisite step) for this New BI system
(MERBI_MDS, MERBI_BIPLATFORM)
Click next to go to port configuration screen
image005
****NOTE: On the port configuration, you have two ways of declaring the ports as discussed earlier so that there will no conflict between ports between two systems. Here I used the option 1, selecting the Auto port configuration, while I have all the existing BI services up and running.
After declaring the ports by any of the method stated above, continue by clicking next
image006
Review and save the file if required which defines configuration for this New BI system.

image008
Monitor the progress of the configuration as shown above....
Note: This configuration wizard will create different opmn windows service for different instances providing the flexibility to manage them separately.
image009
After completion of the configuration process, click next.....
image010
On the complete screen, review and save the post-configuration details screen as it holds the new ports and URLs for the new BI system. Click Finish to complete the configuration of the new BI System.
Issues: As of now, I noticed a scenario where two instances do not co-exist on the same webpage/client. And this is with all three Weblogic console, EM and Presentation services URLs.
